Chowder Cup to start again in 2008
Dees,
In August and early September we will be welcoming back that annual carnival of awesomeness the Chowder Cup. What’s that rookie? What is the Chowder Cup? Well the Chowder Cup is named in honor of the 15 or so immortals who played for the South Boston Chowders in 2002 and crushed the North Shore Knights 6 games to 1 to win the first New England Metro Footy League. Since then we have split the club up into four storied franchises who have fought tooth and nail to win the Chowder Cup each year. The Chowder Cup is generally ten a side games on a shortened field where players get plenty of the ball and can really learn game time decision making, work on their individual skills and fitness. It’s a great way for the less experienced guys to grow as footballers and to introduce new guys to the sport. Its also provides a way for our older retired players to get a game of footy in Boston and pass on their wealth of experience to the next generation without the travel commitments of a full Demons season.
The Chowder Cup is always played in Boston meaning no travel and in the past was a good social event for all including supporters. It would be great to get that spirit going again.
We are not 100% sure on the format whether we will go with 3 teams or 4. I’m hoping that we get enough numbers committed to go with four teams but to do that we will need at least 48 guys who can commit to at least two of the four weeks of Chowder Cup action. I’ll be asking for player sign ups in the last week of July (it’s free of course). Whatever format we will go with we will have an action packed draft that will put the NFL to shame. Each team will have a Captain and a Vice Captain who will be responsible for the running of your club. It’s a big honor. You don’t have to do anything now but I just wanted to make you aware that the Chowder Cup is back and that we will be having regular competitive games in Boston throughout August and September. Start dreaming the Chowder Cup dreams.
The Teams:
The Cambridge Lobstermen:
The most storied franchise in Chowder Cup history with wins in the 2003 and last year. The Lobstermen won “the game.” The 2003 Chowder Cup final over the Jamaica Plain Buffaloes. Against overwhelming odds the Crustaceans won their first title by coming back in the last quarter for a win against the thundering herd. Last year they secured a second championship against the Brookline Killer Bees with a best on ground performance from a ringer in the shape of myself who was awarded the MVP medal by myself.
Colors: Red with a White Anchor
Active Foundation players: Kyle Cross “Mr Lobster”*
The Greats: Will Skinner, Kyle Cross*, Steve Gain*, Skills Burgess, Brendan Hayes, Bulldog, Luke Chamberlain, George Hamilton
The Jamaica Plain Buffaloes:
Often accused of being the darling of the league office, the JP Buffaloes have been the glamour club of the league. With several all time Demons greats on the roster the Buffaloes have been a perennial powerhouse and retain core of players who bleed Buffalo. JP won the 2004 title in the fine style against the Bees.
Colors: Black with Green trim and a yellow cross resembling the Jamaican Flag
Active Foundation players: Scott Mackey, Jamie Gain, James Aylward “The Big Three”
The Greats: “The Big Three”, Al Nugent, Nick van der Graf, Kieran Harvey, Brian Flarrety
The Brookline Killer Bees:
The Bees have swarmed to the Chowder Cup final many times and have had their fair share of bad luck over the years in those finals. The only year they did take the honey back to the hive was in 2006 in the disgraceful “Black Bees” scandal where Jeff “Chugger” Tassi* took over the reigns of the league as Commissioner and stacked his side to an obscene level. This tragic legacy is something Bee fans have had to live with all these years.
Colors: Gold, Grey and Blue (A truly terrible jersey)
Active Foundation players: Jeff Tassi*, Andrew Stratford*, Sean Keane*
The Greats: Strats*, Chris “The Hammer” McClinchy*, Sean Keane*, Earl the Pearl*
The Watertown Rats:
The accursed team. The Rats in all their history have never even appeared in a Chowder Cup final let alone won the thing. That’s an enormous accomplishment when you consider that in a four team league in six tries they have not finished in the top 2. They have been a true Bermuda triangle of Demons talent. With names like Mutton, Bartlett, Florence and Tayler all squandering their chance at Chowder Cup glory. The Rats have been plagued with truly horrible draft classes often favoring the uncommitted flashy Full Forward over the committed, reliable defenders. A franchise in need of a hero and a brain.
Colors: Blue and Gold
Active Foundation players: George Lakomy, Jeff “Poopy” Katstra*
The Greats: Lakomy, Poopy*, Steve “Damo” Florence, Adam Verstegan
Through the years:
2002 South Boston Chowders
2003 Cambridge Lobstermen
2004 Jamaica Plain Buffaloes
2005 Footy ( The final wasn’t plaid this year because so many Demons were on the US Revolution tour of Australia)
2006 Brookline Killer Bees
2007 Cambridge Lobsterman
2008 ?
2008 Chief Commissioner: James Aylward
2008 Deputy Commissioner: Earl Evon
*Indicates was involved in the “Black Bees” Scandal of 2006
Since this was disputed, Damo (fake one) wrote a letter to explain the Rats record..
In defense of the Rats – A short essay by Steve “Damo” Florence (inaugural Rats coach)
For those of you selected to pull on the Rats colors, wear them with pride and hold your rodent heads high. It’s true that the Rats have not had a lot championship success over the years but no franchise in Chowder Cup history has been more entertaining, misunderstood, dramatic or just flat out compelling than the rodents of Watertown. Whether at their flamboyant best or at their shambolic worst one fact remains: the Rats put bums on seats.
The rodents have a tragic history suffering under ‘the curse of the Benbino’, a terrible hex put on the club in it’s inaugural year when star mid-fielder Ben Taylor was deported just as the Rats were gearing up for a run at the cup. Since then the club has suffered innumerable setbacks and public humiliations ranging from the now infamous 2004 “Sex Boat” scandal to Jeff “Pacman” Kastra’s many run-ins with the law. However, these things pale in comparison to the real reason behind Watertown’s lack of silverware in the cabinet which is simply that no Rat has been corrupt enough to serve simultaneously as both player and league commissioner and load up the team with disproportional talent.
Stay classy in defeat Rodents.

Boston Demons lose nail biter to Baltimore-Washington Eagles by 3 points. 9-18 (72) to 10-9 (69)
The Boston Demons played their first game of the 2008 EAFL season against the number 2 ranked BW Eagles. In oppressive heat south of Boston the Demons saw a very positive 35 players turn up to play. There was a 9 a side Metro game as a curtain raiser that featured not only brand new Demons but also players new to the game. The heat took its toll on everyone and was definitely setting the stage for a very tough main event. The number 2 ranked BW Eagles look fit and determined as they took the ground. The Demons in their first hit out of the season, also under the guidance of their new coach Scott Nicholas, were determined to set the stage for a new season. The game started and was very physical right from the first bounce. The heat and intensity continued to rise as the day went on. Boston pushed through some teething problems, and slightly better kicking, to be in front at the first break 22 to 17. BWE came out fired up in the second quarter as Boston struggled to find their ground. With only 2 shots on goal for the quarter, Boston trailed at the main break 29 to 40. Half time had the coaching staff urging the team to stick to its plan, playing long and using their height. Despite the surge, the Demons were jumped and caught napping. The Eagles with an attack on goal kicked 3 relative quick goals, leaving the Demons in their wake. Boston refused to lie down and fought back from a 30 point deficit to be 17 behind at the final change. Again being urged to stick to their plan and playing with the Demons pride we know still exists, the Dees started to play the game the way they should have and began to control the quarter, and nearly the game. Final scores saw an exhausted bunch of players coming in 3 points short. Apart from some undisciplined plays (3 X 50 meter penalties that resulted in goals to BWE) the Demons should that they are a team to be reckoned with in 2008, finishing strong and with their pride intact.
Goal Kickers:
Damo – 3, Ards – 2, Seanny – 2, Clarky – 1, Earl – 1 and Bam - 1
BEST:
Damien Helem, Arthur Campbell, Jason DeGeorge, Earl Evon, Jamie Gaines

Legend Tony Morwood joins the Demons for a training session.
Tony Morwood and Greg Everett Visit Boston Demons
Tony Morwood, a member of the Sydney Swans Team of the Century and Greg Everett, the current coach of the Canadian National AFL team, paid a special visit to the Boston Demons last week. Tony and Greg attended training on Thursday May 29, helping out with a few drills, and providing words of inspiration to the playing group.
Tony Morwood played 12 seasons with South Melbourne and Sydney, playing 229 games and kicking 397 goals. He was the Swans leading goalkicker in 1979 and 1982, and is placed 5th on the all-time list of Swans goal kickers.
We would like to thank both Tony and Greg for taking the time to visit the Boston Demons, and for donating several new Sherrins, as well as an autographed Sydney Swans geurnsey, to the club.

Upset Win - Demonasaurs defeat Diaper Demons in titanic clash! 108-78
Demonasaurs came out hard and fast in the first quater with 4 quick goals. The young Demons fought back throughout the match, but just didn't have an answer to the skills of the old men.
Speaking after the match whilst on an oxygen tank, Coach Scotty was thoroughly pleased with his teams efforts - especially his own. "I personally think i was MARVELLOUS.. with a capital M" Lance Franklin look out..
With a few dubious cheap shots, the Demonasaurs have shown why age is no barrier to playing dirty. Winning the clash of old vs young.
Final score was 108 to 78.
OFFICIAL MATCH REPORT
In a titanic struggle between youth and experience, the Boston Demons first intraclub match was held at Minuteman Field on Saturday with the wily Demonasaurs running out eventual winners over the Diaper Demons 16.1 (108) to 11.1 (78) in a hard fought contest.
The Old Blokes started strongly dominating the midfield in the first quarter with inspiring performances from Stratford, Evon & Clarke leading to 4 straight goals and a Young Blokes squad stunned into silence. Only some penetrating kicking from Damo Helem and the ability of Pete “Macca” McCormick to occasionally break free from Demons legend Brad Rinklin allowed the Diapers to respond with two late goals to keep their hopes alive.
The tide turned in the second quarter with the Diapers carrying the momentum through Moreton, Mackey and Damo to kick four solid goals including a Pele’-style soccered major from a new-look Paul Haggerty that left the Demonasaurs backline scratching their heads. The Old Blokes struck back late in the quarter with three majors and a Scott Nicholas drop-kick running very slowly into an open goal to take a narrow lead into the main break.
An inspiring half time pep-talk from Diapers Coach McCormick left his charges confused and disoriented and the Demonasaurs took advantage of the lapse in concentration with Mark Smerdon driving hard of the half back line to send his team regularly into attack. An outstanding boundary line goal from Andrew Stratford further lifted the Demonasaurs and with with two booming majors from big man Homer the Old Blokes took a solid 21 point lead into three quarter time.
The fourth quarter saw the Diapers come out firing with Pete McNamara gaining possessions all over the ground, new talent Mark McCaffrey & Danny Yunes making good use of their possessions, and Jamie Gain showing good form. Damo Helem continued his excellent performance taking several impressive overhead marks and showing great intensity in every contest. A running Michael Shepherd took two solid grabs to keep the aging Demonasaurs backline guessing as Mark ‘Pointy Bird’ Sleet engaged in a strong tussle with Ed Mulrenan at every turn. Other strong contributors included rookie Dave Abrentice, Tim Hopper and Hair Joniec who ensured the old blokes won no easy contests.
Veteran full-back Gordon ‘Flash’ Beith had to draw on his near half-century of footballing experience to hold together a tiring Demonasaurs backline and was strongly supported by the charging Rhino, Jason de George. Demons superstar Will Skinner showed his silky skills remain intact, though he was unable to hold back an elusive Scott Dewar goal and a super goal from a pumped up Cam Stewart.
The Demonasaurs fought back however and were able to lock the ball into their forward line for long periods giving goal sneak Ben Hancock the opportunity to make space and kick two key goals while being strongly supported by Jason Ellul. George Lakomy took a break from guarding danger man Skills Burgess to create an inspirational run out of the Diapers backline, only to be repelled by lurking veterans in Tommy Ruyle, Surfer del Mar, Chugger Tassi and the ever running Greg Narleski who all worked hard to extend the lead.
The game was a great success and demonstrated clearly the depth of talent and commitment that the Boston Demons will carry into the 2008 EAFL & Nationals campaigns. Thanks to all players and supporters and umpiring guru Dougie Algate who did a great job as always with the whistle.

NEW PLAYING EQUIPMENT DONATED BY MELBOURNEfc
Article Written by Cam Stewart
The Melbourne Football Club has kindly donated new playing equipment to the Boston Demons for the 2008 season. While in Australia on holidays in January 2008, I got the chance to visit MELBOURNEfc at the Junction Oval to pick up the new gear and meet a few members of the club.
A real highlight was meeting players David Neitz, Jared Rivers, Brock McLean, Brad Green, Cam Bruce and Brad Miller. These guys had a pretty impressive knowledge of sport in Boston, particularly the Red Sox, Celtics and the Pats. Another highlight was meeting Melbourne’s new coach, Dean Bailey, who was very keen to develop relations between our two clubs, and is also keen to catch a Patriots game live in the future.
I should point out that MELBOURNEfc have gifted us a huge amount of gear- 40 playing jumpers, over 60 pairs of playing shorts, and quite few other goodies including coats, polos and shorts.
A huge thanks to thank Ross Monaghan and Dale Christie from MELBOURNEfc for putting together the donated goods, as well as our club president Mike Larsen for organizing things at our end.
